Facebook Ads vs. Google Ads: Where Should a Local Business Spend First?

Google Ads captures people already searching for you; Facebook and Instagram ads create demand that was not there yet. Which one deserves your first dollar depends on your business type.

Local businesses usually have one advertising budget and two loud options: Google Ads or Facebook/Instagram ads. Agencies that sell only one will tell you theirs is the answer. The truth is they do completely different jobs — and which deserves your first dollar depends on what you sell.

The core difference: intent

Google Ads capture demand that already exists. Someone typing “emergency plumber near me” or “tax preparer Bakersfield” has a problem right now; your ad meets them at the exact moment of need. Facebook and Instagram ads create demand. Nobody scrolls Instagram looking for a kitchen remodeler — but a stunning before/after photo can plant the idea that becomes next month’s project.

Start with Google if…

Your customers have urgent, searchable problems: trades and home services, repair shops, lawyers, medical and dental, anything “near me.” When someone’s water heater dies, they search — they don’t wait to be inspired. For these businesses, Google Ads almost always produces the cheapest first leads.

Start with Facebook/Instagram if…

Your product is visual, discretionary, or impulse-friendly: restaurants, boutiques, salons and med spas, events, gyms, home improvement. These win on the scroll with great creative, precise local targeting, and retargeting that stays in front of people until they’re ready. That’s the engine behind our social media advertising service.

Budgets and expectations

Local Google campaigns get real traction around $500–$1,500/month in ad spend; Facebook campaigns from about $300–$1,000/month. Expect the first few weeks on either platform to be a tuning period as real data replaces assumptions — the campaigns that print money in month three are the ones that were measured honestly in month one.

The mature answer: both, sequenced

Most of our long-term clients end up running Google for the ready-to-buy searches, Facebook for staying visible between needs, and retargeting to connect the two. But you get there by starting with the platform matched to your business — not by splitting a small budget thin across both on day one.
